Is IIFYM (if it fits your macros) the best diet for weight loss?

IIFYM means that you can eat whichever foods you like, however you must consume a specified number of calories and grams of carbohydrates, fat, and protein, without exceeding these amounts.
One of the newest diet trends in the fitness community is IIFYM, which means that you can eat whichever foods you like, however at the end of the day, you must consume a specified number of calories and grams of carbohydrates, fat, and protein, without exceeding these amounts. Each person’s calorie needs and macronutrient needs (grams of protein, carbs, and fats) are different and individualized towards their goals.
Many people hop on this bandwagon because it allows for a variety of foods in one’s diet and people feel less restricted and less “on a diet.” Because of this, I believe that the people who follow IIFYM are more successful than those following a very restrictive diet plan that only permits several different foods. They select which foods they want to use their calories on instead of having to eat something you may not be in the mood for.
Everyone is different and what diet may work for one person may not work for another.
However, as with almost every diet plan, there are downfalls to this diet. Because you do have the option to choose which foods to eat, it is very easy to select unhealthy foods. I have seen this happen too many times. Someone may require 1800 calories per day, although chooses to eat a cheeseburger and ice cream for dinner “because it fits their macros for the day.” Yes, sticking to a specific number of calories and macronutrients will definitely assist in weight loss or changes in body composition when done correctly, however it may not be the cleanest diet depending on one’s food choices.
Everyone is different and what diet may work for one person may not work for another. There are many different diets out there and the best one to follow is one that can be sustained for years. If you start following a new diet plan and find that within a few weeks it is difficult to stick to, chances are it's not one you would adhere to long term. Sometimes it just takes trial and error before finding which diet is best for you! I have seen many people find great success following IIFYM, it just comes down to how you approach it and how realistic it is for your lifestyle!
